What is Rybelsus?
Rybelsus tablets (semaglutide) are used for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to control blood sugar levels. Rybelsus has also been shown in studies to help weight loss, but it is not an FDA-approved weight loss medicine. Rybelsus tablets are a once-a-day tablet that is used along with diet and exercise.

Rybelsus tablets work to lower blood sugar (glucose) levels by increasing how much insulin is released and decreasing glucagon secretion. This medicine also may slow gastric emptying after eating. Rybelsus is from the class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist), meaning it acts like the natural GLP-1 hormone in the body.

Rybelsus tablets contain the same active ingredient as Wegovy injection and Ozempic injection. Wegovy is approved for weight management, and Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes.

Rybelsus is not for treating type 1 diabetes.

TIPS

  • Take Rybelsus (semaglutide) on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning after you wake up. Take the medication with no more than 4 fl oz of water.
  • Rybelsus (semaglutide) can interact and affect how well your body absorbs other medications. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking Rybelsus (semaglutide) to eat, drink, or take any other medications.
  • Swallow the tablets whole. Don’t crush, chew, or split the tablets because doing so can cause you to take an inaccurate dose of the medication.
  • If you’re prescribed 14 mg per day of Rybelsus (semaglutide), be sure that you’re taking one 14 mg tablet per day. Don’t take two 7 mg tablets since it might not work as well.
  • If you accidentally miss a dose of Rybelsus (semaglutide), skip it and take the next dose on the following day.
  • Rybelsus (semaglutide) works best if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common when you first start taking Rybelsus (semaglutide) or when your dose is raised. Let your provider know if these side effects worsen or won’t go away.
  • Rybelsus (semaglutide) can cause low blood sugar, especially if you use other diabetes medications like sulfonylureas or insulins. Make sure you know how to recognize and treat symptoms of low blood sugar, such as shaking, sweating, dizziness, confusion, and blurred vision.
